I use soft pastels by layering or blending of pastel colors on archival coated or sanded paper. Various effects are created by layering the pigments or blending the pigments with a blending stump or fingers or with the stick itself. Sometimes a fixative is applied as part of the painting process to darken the values and pigment colors. Pastel is then applied on top which gives the appearance of depth as the colors "pop" out up out of the painting. Usually no fixative is applied on the finished painting. I use a steam iron and distilled water to steam the finished painting which fixes the pastel. Steaming the painting does not change the values or details of the finished painting.
